Safety Tips for Kids Playing Outdoors
If your child is always on the move, consider yourself lucky. That means that your child is healthy, happy and as curious about life as they should be! Whether your child loves splashing in puddles of rain during the fall, making snow angels in wintertime, or lying down in the grass as she basks in the sun of summer, you’re main concern (year round) is keeping them as safe as possible. We’ve put together a cheat sheet for you, so that no matter time of the year it is, your kids stay happy and healthy without risk of injury!
Scan Your Backyard For Danger and Risk
It’s easy for your children to break a rule about playing safely outside—especially when they aren’t clear on what those rules are! You may think because your children are playing in your backyard, that they’re out of harm’s way—but as you well know, children always need supervision. As active as they are, an injury or accident can happen in a split second, but you can significantly reduce their risk by surveying your backyard before they start playing.
It only takes a minute to be on the lookout and search out possible risks that could turn their playtime into harm. During wintertime, look for ice on your patio that may cause a slip. During the summer months, scan the ceilings and corners of your foundation (as well as swing set and treehouse) for bee hives. Take a look at your swing set. Is their snow or sleet on the slide? Do you swings need to be wiped down so your children can enjoy them without risk of slipping off? Point them out and tell your children there are a few “off limits” areas of the backyard they need to stay away from.
Keep an Eye on Them (Even When You Can’t)
If you need to go inside occasionally while your children are outside, set up a baby monitor—even if your kids are older and are well past the infant stage. If you aren’t staying outside supervising every minute they’re sliding and swinging, this can be a great tool to ensure they’re safe and out of danger. Even during the winter months, kids can play outside for hours on end. Ultimately, children are quick to get dehydrated and run down (even if it seems like they are they could go all day!) Monitor how long they play. Set up breaks for water and a snack periodically so that they don’t run their body ragged and maintain a positive attitude with their playmates.
