Outdoor Playsets - Safety First

When choosing an outdoor play set, it is relatively easy to look out for the obvious risks your child might encounter: falling from heights, an un-cushioned play area, trip hazards, etc. What many parents and guardians may overlook is the possibility that the playset itself could pose a threat, if the wrong type of set is chosen.

Cheaply made, poorly constructed outdoor playsets can, at times, be fraught with unforeseen hazards due to their inferior construction. Metal sets can become searing hot in the sun, and can burn delicate skin. Lightweight sets, if not properly anchored with concrete at the base or anchor cables, can easily tip during play. Over time, thin metal tubing can rust and become weak or develop sharp edges on which a child can get cut.

Wooden sets made from thin or knotty wood can crack and splinter, putting a child at risk for cuts, punctures or even failure of a supporting beam. Backyard playsets made from pine and other wood may be treated with harmful chemicals intended to preserve the wood.
