Outdoor Playsets - Safety First

Outdoor PlaysetsWhen choosing an outdoor play set, it is relatively easy to look out for the obvious risks your child might encounter: falling from heights, an un-cushioned play area, trip hazards, etc. What many parents and guardians may overlook is the possibility that the playset itself could pose a threat, if the wrong type of set is chosen.

Cheaply made, poorly constructed outdoor playsets can, at times, be fraught with unforeseen hazards due to their inferior construction. Metal sets can become searing hot in the sun, and can burn delicate skin. Lightweight sets, if not properly anchored with concrete at the base or anchor cables, can easily tip during play. Over time, thin metal tubing can rust and become weak or develop sharp edges on which a child can get cut.

Wooden sets made from thin or knotty wood can crack and splinter, putting a child at risk for cuts, punctures or even failure of a supporting beam. Backyard playsets made from pine and other wood may be treated with harmful chemicals intended to preserve the wood.

Eastern Jungle Gym Backyard Playsets

backyard playsetsThe solid wood construction of Eastern’s backyard playsets means children are safe from many of the dangers inherent with metal and cheaper wood sets. Our premium cedar wood is cut to 4″x4″ and 4″x6″ sizes, much thicker than our competitors’ beams and posts. All the wood is sanded and the corners are rounded so that there are no sharp edges on any of our outdoor playsets on which a child can get injured.

Heavy-duty plastic slides, swings and other accessories are UV protected to provide a cooler play surface. Each Eastern Jungle Gym outdoor play set comes with a ground support system to ensure even weight distribution and a leveling system that allows you to arrange your playset according to your unique property conditions.

Caring for All Wooden Playgrounds and Playsets

Wood Swingset Kits

If you’ve made the decision to go for it and purchase a high quality wooden jungle gym for your family, congratulations! Wood swingset kits are a tremendous value, offering an easy-to-assemble backyard haven that children of all ages can enjoy for many years. With yearly care, a wooden playground can stay just as sturdy, stable, safe and attractive a decade from now as it was when you first put it together. To achieve long-lasting performance from your playset and swing set accessories, take a few moments once in a while to perform some basic maintenance.

Routinely inspect your backyard play equipment for wear and damage. Make sure all bolts are intact and tightened. In addition to inspecting the playset itself, inspect the surroundings to make sure the ground around it is free of debris, and that materials used to mulch the ground are in adequate supply.

Keep playground equipment clean of dirt, germs, bugs and bird droppings with regular washing (a power washer is probably a good investment for this purpose). The premium cedar wood used in the construction of Eastern’s Swing Sets is naturally rot and pest resistant, and is factory stained and sealed; however, you should re-seal the wood with a recommended sealer every year to ensure the beauty of your Eastern Jungle Gym.

With fuel costs on the rise, a growing number of families are spending more time at home in their backyard enjoying the outdoors. To occupy the kids while the family is in the backyard – and to help children develop their co-ordination as well as giving them more physical exercise – parents are turning to outdoor playground sets.

These are not the simple backyard swing sets with two swings and a slide that you played with as a child – today’s high quality, sophisticated, wooden ‘play systems’ are multifaceted devices that offer a variety of choices and options such as swings, gym rings, trapeze bars, gliders, spiral tube slides, monkey bars, gang planks and tree houses, just to mention a few.

Generally speaking, outdoor wooden play systems are designed for children ages two and up, however, an infant swing can be used for children 8-12 months old. These sets are made to withstand all weather conditions and are easy to maintain – only requiring periodical staining or sealing of the wood.

And contrary to popular belief, your kids will use them in the fall and winter months as well as in the warmer weather months.

Popular play sets from Eastern Jungle Gym Inc.®, which manufactures a wide array of jungle gyms, include the Dream®, Sky®, Fantasy®, and Imagination® models. These play sets include clubhouses that range from 1.5m to 2.1m (5 ft. to 7 ft.) in height with multiple slides and activities. There is even a ‘Tree House’ model for the dad who never got around to building one of his own as a child …

Eastern Jungle Gym finds growth via small steps

With sales volume up by more than 20%, Eastern Jungle Gym is proof that many specialty dealers decided to stop the slide of the poor economy in 2009 by adding new product lines.

“The smart specialty dealers have realized that the more they diversify the easier it is for them to make it through the season,” said Rolf Zimmermann, vice president of sales and marketing, Eastern Jungle Gym, Carmel, N.Y.

Launched more than 17 years ago by brothers Scott and Mark Honigsberg, Eastern Jungle Gym began by manufacturing play sets for direct sale in its retail locations, which now include three in New York and two in Connecticut. The most recent store opened earlier this year.

After launching its wholesale division four years ago, the company now is concentrating its expansion efforts on this side of the business. Eastern Jungle Gym first focused on markets in the Northeast then gradually expanded south and westward.

“We wanted to get comfortable on the East Coast first and make sure that everything was in place before expanding,” said Zimmermann, who started with the company 15 years ago when he managed its first retail location. “So our progressive growth has been very strategic.”

Eastern Jungle Gym offers nine play set models, all for residential use. The play sets are made of cedar, rather than pressure-treated lumber, so are chemical free.

“Our high level of quality really separates us from the product found in the mass merchants,” Zimmermann said. “We are definitely geared to the specialty retailer.”

Those dealers represent a range of industries, from casual furniture to hearth and even fencing retailers. Some, like Eastern Jungle Gym’s retail stores, are primarily swing set dealers, while most carry the play sets as a secondary or third product line.

For those who are selling the outdoor room, adding the outdoor play room is a natural extension. The challenge for many, however, is limited space.

Eastern Jungle Gym’s experience shows that dealers with a minimum of three sets on display reap the sales they need to justify the space. As Zimmermann points out, having a single set on display can confuse consumers because they may not realize that the set is for sale.

“Dealers who have enough models on display to represent the line and to give the impression that they are the place to come to when shopping for a swing set are the ones who do well,” Zimmermann said.

He admits that many who haven’t tried selling play sets are skeptical about the category’s profitability. But Zimmermann believes that attitude is changing thanks in part to what is happening in the big box stores.

“As retailers see that even mass merchants are starting to offer a higher quality swing set, they are starting to think that there must be a market for it and that they should be in it,” he said.

Eastern Jungle Gym’s wholesale sales have doubled every year for the last three years, with dealers seeing consistent growth in the category even through the recession, Zimmermann said.

In addition to people spending more time at home, Zimmermann believes that parents’ natural tendency to spend money on their children gives the category an advantage no matter what the economy is doing.

That said, 2009 was a tough year and margins were down.

To help its dealers maintain profitability, Eastern Jungle Gym dropped its early buy program and offered them minimal inventory and quick delivery. The company plans a similar approach for 2010.

The manufacturer also supports its dealers with a strong Internet program that includes a Web site that directs traffic to dealers and extensive online advertising.

“The Internet is clearly becoming a bigger and bigger part of retailing in a number of ways,” Zimmermann said. “We direct a huge amount of our advertising budget to it because it one of the quickest, easy ways to find whatever you need and most people are very comfortable with it. We think it is a fantastic tool that is just getting bigger and bigger.”

Although the company doesn’t sell its product online, Zimmermann doesn’t rule out the option for the future. But should the manufacturer go into e-tailing at some point, it will be with another brand, he added.

“If and when we decide to go online with a product, we will brand it under another name and model to protect our brick-and-mortar dealers,” Zimmermann said.

Eastern Jungle Gym’s evolution is a familiar family business story. It started small, when the Honigsberg brothers decided they could build a swing set competitive with anything on the market. They focused on quality and the market responded.

Zimmermann fully anticipates that success to continue.

“It got to a point where the company had to make the decision which direction it would go,” Zimmermann said. “It wasn’t hard to see the growth and the potential that was out there. It was just a matter of whether they wanted to take risk to go after it.

“Some companies are very comfortable with a very small market share and that’s where they stay; other companies see the potential and expand to it, which is what Mark and Scott did,” he added. “I think it’s just the beginning. I think we have an unlimited growth opportunity ahead.”
